Last Wednesday, I upset my mother and made her cry.
If you know me at all, you’ll know how devastating that was for me, and how difficult it is for me to admit it. But the whole experience illuminated some interesting aspects of our particular relationship and how it affects this aging/caregiving journey.
This historical novel is quite a departure for author Meg Waite Clayton, and it was a highly successful one for this reader. The Race for Paris is set in WWII, before the liberation of Paris by the Allied forces. The novel traces the journey of two female journalists - photographer Olivia and reporter Jane - who go AWOL from the press corps in order to reach Paris with the Allies and capture the first moments of liberation to preserve for posterity, enlisting the aid of Fletcher, a British military photographer who shepherd’s them through the French countryside toward the city.
I LOVE the fall colors, they are simply breathtaking here. If asked, I always say that autumn is my favorite season. It means cool refreshing walks with crunchy leaves underfoot, cozy evenings in front of the fireplace, savory soups and stews in the crockpot, soft and cuddly sweaters. It means I can wear my black leather boots again, and I feel very cool wearing black leather boots.
During my grandson’s recent visit with us, I learned quickly to watch my words or else be prepared to switch gears in an instant. When presented with a suggestion of something to do, somewhere to go, or something good to eat, Connor is likely to jump up and shout enthusiastically “I want to do that NOW!”
